Shanghai

Last week I was lucky enough to travel to Shanghai for work—and what a fascinating city it is! It was hard to imagine that just over 10 years ago this city was less than half it's current size. I spent many hours walking the city streets, exploring as much of the culture on foot before resorting to the excellent subway system. One of the highlights of my trip was visiting a Chinese supermarket with the team, where I got to see a whole new perspective on shopping. It was also great to see a few of the designs I'd worked on from the Melbourne studio, such as the Vinda tissue pack below.

I loved the translation of the Coca-Cola wordmark, and had to resist bringing the entire range back in my suitcase. It was an extremely worthwhile trip, and I thank the great Cowan Shanghai team members for showing me around their great city.

Black & White Invitation

Paige recently celebrated her 21st birthday, and being the awesome boyfriend I am, I spent a shit load of time designing her invites :) I wanted it to be typographical, and I wanted it to be crafted—which inevitably meant many hours fiddling with each letter, to then have to go back to the start because 'the client' found it difficult to read (haha in hindsight she was right). In the end our relationship survived and the invites turned out good ;)

On Show 2013

The Stonnington School of Dance senior mid-year show is yet again turning up the heat, and this years Gatsby-inspired concert features some incredible dance numbers, along with some glitzy costumes, and my job was to create a fitting poster design. This is then rolled out across different print media to be displayed on the night, such as giant A1 posters for the venues entrance—overall, a great project to be involved with. Below is the main poster, followed by one of the secondary images.

The Cowan Church

My best mate James is currently studying photography, and during the week he snapped some great photo's of our head office in Melbourne, the Cowan Church. For any of you wanting some well priced photo's, you can hit him up on his facebook page.

1960's Coke Can

Like many of you, I'm loving the new season of Mad Men. The renowned set design and impeccable costumes take some of you down memory lane, and younger others (like myself) to another world which we never knew. The props are no exception to this nostalgia, and episode 7 featured a 1960's Coca-Cola can design. This was a style in which I had never seen the brand treated before, and I found it somewhat refreshing, and worth a share. Below is a screen shot from the ep, starring the striking diamond pattern.

Going Pro

In February this year I was introduced to the world of GoPro, with the HERO3 Black Edition for my 23rd birthday... and what a world I was missing out on! Instantly after taking to the web, I could see the brillance that was jammed pack within this insanely small camera. So after spending a few weekends down the beach in the sunshine, I've put together a glimpse of the footage this thing can capture—and at 240 frames taken every second, it does a pretty sexy slow motion...

Cowan website

As some of you may know, I've started a new role at Cowan and I'm now responsible for communications and online media. This puts me at the realm for updating the global website. Last week, much to the teams excitement, we took down the old site, and replaced it with a fresh holding page. This will now push the full redesign forward, and we should have something up within 6 weeks. It truly is exciting times at Cowan !

Porsche 911

What do you get, decades later, when simplicity meets refinement? The evolution of the Coca-Cola bottle, the product designs of Apple, the taste of Heineken, the logo mark of Shell, the packaging of Marlboro, and what's commonly known as the best sports car in the world, the Porsche 911.

Since 1963, the production line of this very special car currently stands at 76 years, and yet still remains a true descendant of the original concept—sporty design, distinctive shape, balanced handling, and a driving pleasure that can be felt through the steering wheel that invigorates passion in every true driver.

Porsche are proud of the 911, and they should be. They've stayed true to this car, with every update, and is now my favourite piece of design in the world...

Josip Kelava: MDC

I'm in love the latest campaign for the Melbourne Dance Company by Josip Kelava. Yes, it's aesthetically stunning, and the type is beautifully crafted—but most compelling is the treatment of the photography and type communicating a frozen moment of movement and capturing the grace of dance. Josip himself sums it up perfectly... "I had to remember that dance was an expression of movement, and thus, I wanted the type to wrap around the dancer, as if it was dancing on it’s own"... Brilliant !
